Hair Loss Prevention

Prevention is better than cure.

Prevent Hair Loss

Men and women typically lose 50 to 100 hairs a day which usually isn’t noticeable because new hair is growing in at the same time.

Hair loss occurs when hair follicles start to shrink and new hair doesn’t replace the hair that has fallen out. If this is due to genetics, the hair loss, androgenic alopecia, may start in their 20s and worsen over time with men noticing a receding hair line or bald spot on top of their head or women noticing general thinning or widening parting.

Without treatment, this may progress to permanent baldness with no way to revive lost hair follicles or “regrow” hair from a dead follicle.

How Hair Growth Works

  • Growth (Anagen) phase is 3 to 5 years for scalp hair with up to 90% in this phase at any time.
  • Transition phase is about 10 days. Growth slows and follicle shrinks with 5% in this phase at any time.
  • Resting phase is around 3 months when hairs don’t grow.
  • Shedding phase can last 2 to 5 months, new hairs start to form in follicles as 50 to 100 hairs are shed per day. 10 to 15% of scalp hair are in the resting and shedding phase at any time.

Why Hair Loss Prevention?

Early treatments can help to reduce or stop hair loss in the shedding phase with better results achieved the earlier a treatment is started to strengthen and thicken existing hair follicles. This can be done by:

  • Ensuring you are receiving enough biotin, iron, zinc and protein.
  • Applying Minoxidil shampoo/hair serum.
  • For men, Finasteride tablets will also help reduce the conversion of testosterone to a particular male hormone, called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) specifically in the scalp to help reverse the balding process in mild to moderate hair loss.
